Amazon Basics 2400 mAh AA Review: Cheaper, Not Better
Amazon Basics 12-pack rechargeable AAs are my least favorite NiMH option. The 2400 mAh claim didn't survive my refresh-charge test, and they're physically big.

The Amazon Basics rechargeable AAs are the worst rechargeable AA batteries in my rotation. I bought them because the price was right, and I still use them because they are cheaper. I would not buy them again if the price were the same as my Panasonic Eneloops.
I should flag the grade up front: this is a C. That is a step below the Eneloops (A) and the Energizer Recharge Universal AAs (B). It is not a “broken product” C. It is a “works, but I would not recommend” C.
Which Amazon Basics this review covers
The pack I bought is the Amazon Basics 12-pack of rechargeable AA NiMH batteries rated at 2400 mAh, low self-discharge, pre-charged. I bought it three years ago. The Amazon Special Link in this review points to the same Amazon Basics 12-pack, ASIN B07NWT6YLD. That is the current listing with the same 2400 mAh, 1.2 V, pre-charged, “recharge up to 400x” specifications.
The batteries I have are the green-and-black Amazon Basics 2400 mAh cells with white text. They are not the older black-and-white Amazon Basics 2000 mAh cells, and they are not the white-label pre-charged Amazon Basics sold under different SKU colors.
Living with them
The honest reason these are my least favorite is that the 2400 mAh label did not hold up under my refresh-charge test.
I refresh-charge my AA batteries every six months to a year. The Opus BT-C2000 lets me run each cell through a discharge-then-charge cycle. When I do that to the Eneloops, I see a real capacity close to the rated 2000 mAh — they actually deliver what they advertise. When I do that to the Amazon Basics 2400 mAh cells, I do not see anywhere near 2400 mAh. I do not get above 2000 mAh on a refreshed cell. That is a third less than the box says, every time I check.
For a battery you charge up and trust to last, that gap matters. I have to plan around the assumption that these cells hold about 1900–2000 mAh in real use, not the 2400 mAh on the label. That is the same usable capacity as a regular white Eneloop rated at 2000 mAh, but the Eneloop is more honest about it and holds its charge longer sitting on a shelf.
The other issue is size. The Amazon Basics 2400 mAh cells are a little physically larger than other AA NiMH cells I own. That sounds like a small thing. In tight battery compartments — game controllers, some remote controls, anything with a snug spring or a hard plastic guide — the extra fraction of a millimeter or two is enough to make the battery hard to seat or to break the snap-fit cover. I have run into this in at least one device I own. I have not had the same issue with Eneloops or with Energizer Recharge Universal AAs.
In actual use, the batteries work. They power my Xbox controllers, my stair lights, and other devices without issue. They just do not last as long per charge as my Eneloops do, and they are physically a tight fit in some devices.
What I like
- The price is real. Amazon Basics NiMH is cheaper per cell than the Eneloop 12-pack, and noticeably cheaper than the Energizer 16-pack. If price is the deciding factor, these are the cheapest option I have used.
- They work. The batteries power controllers, lights, and small devices without failure. They hold a charge long enough to be useful day-to-day.
- They are pre-charged. I can pull them out of the pack and use them. The pre-charged rating matches what I have experienced.
- I still use them. Three years in, I have not thrown any out. The green batteries are still in rotation.
What annoys me
- The 2400 mAh claim does not survive a refresh. Real refreshed capacity is below 2000 mAh on my tester. That is the headline gap between the marketing label and the lived experience.
- They are physically bigger than other AAs. The size difference is enough to cause fit problems in tight battery compartments on at least one device I own.
- They do not hold a charge as long as Eneloops on the shelf. Between refresh cycles, the Eneloops stay useful longer in low-drain devices. The Amazon Basics lose meaningful charge faster.
- The price gap is shrinking. I keep buying the Eneloop anyway because the per-cell cost difference is no longer large enough to justify the fit and capacity problems.
- Capacity is not the only number that matters. Even if the cells delivered close to 2400 mAh on day one, that does not help if the device fits them poorly or if they self-discharge faster.
Who it is for, and who should skip it
If the deciding factor is price per cell and you only need AA batteries for low-drain devices that do not mind a slightly larger cell, these will work. For someone outfitting a garage full of remote-controlled toys or stocking a drawer for occasional flashlights, the Amazon Basics 2400 mAh pack is acceptable.
Skip them if the device has a tight battery compartment, if you want honest 2400 mAh, if you need long shelf retention between uses, or if the price gap between these and the Eneloops is small at the time you are shopping. I am in that last group now, and that is why these are my least favorite.
Verdict
The Amazon Basics rechargeable AAs are cheaper than my Eneloops, work well enough to keep using, but do not deliver on the 2400 mAh label and run physically large. They are a price choice, not a quality choice.
Grade: C. Buy them only if price is the deciding factor.

A “refreshed capacity” reading from a smart charger/analyzer is not a substitute for a controlled laboratory test, but it is consistent across multiple refreshes on multiple cells in my experience. A 2400 mAh label that delivers below 2000 mAh in the real world is a real gap. The honest comparison is not 2400 vs 2000 — it is “below 2000” vs “close to 2000.”
AA cells are manufactured to a nominal size (IEC HR6). Cells that exceed the upper bound of that tolerance can cause fit problems in tight compartments. Some Amazon Basics owners on user forums have reported the same issue with various device types. If a device fits them poorly, the practical answer is to use cells that fit, not to blame the device.
