Elevation Lab AirTag Extended Battery Case Review: 14× the Capacity, but the Wrench Is the Catch

I bought the Elevation Lab AirTag extended battery case about 18 months ago and I have used two of them since. They sit an AirTag in a metal case powered by two AAs instead of a CR2032 coin cell. The pitch is “10-year battery” — that is, if you stick in Energizer Ultimate Lithium AAs. I am using rechargeables, so I do not expect to hit that. I have replaced the rechargeable AAs twice in 18 months, which is a long way from 10 years but still beats the year-and-change I was getting from the stock CR2032s, and the cases themselves have been rock-solid. The catch — and the reason I am giving this a B and not an A — is the captive screw design and the fact that the screws and the hex key come separately and you have to keep track of them across the spare cases you are not actively using.
What it is
The Elevation Lab AirTag 10-Year Extended Battery Case is a rugged sealed case that holds an Apple AirTag and runs it on two AA batteries. The case is wider than a stock AirTag — the body needs room for the batteries — but it is small enough to drop in a glove box, throw in a backpack, or toss in a vehicle’s trunk. The matching screw system and gasket make the assembled case waterproof (or at least water-resistant enough for outdoor use).
This is the 10-year variant. There is also a 5-year variant that runs on AAA cells and is more compact, plus an adhesive-mount variant for permanent fixture. I bought the 10-year AA version because I wanted maximum time between battery swaps on the two AirTags I was going to deploy in vehicles and a backpack. The 4-pack is the SKU on this listing; a 2-pack is available elsewhere.
The cases install the AirTag inside the body, with the AirTag’s speaker grille facing out through a small port. Once assembled, the AirTag is sealed in. You check battery status from the Find My app as usual — the case has no electronics of its own.
Why I bought it
The AirTags I had been using for vehicles had a chronic problem: stock CR2032 batteries ran out about once a year, and changing them was annoying because the AirTag was tucked under a car seat or zip-tied inside a backpack pocket. I was looking for something that I could deploy and mostly forget about.
The Elevation Lab case solves that two ways. Two AAs have roughly 14× the energy of a CR2032. If you use lithium AAs, that translates to about 10 years of life on a single set. I am not going to make it 10 years, because I am using rechargeables, but I do not need 10 years — I just need more than the year and change the stock coin cells were giving me.
Living with it
I have two AirTags deployed in Elevation Lab cases. One is in a vehicle, tucked behind the spare tire well in the trunk. The other is in a backpack that gets thrown in the cargo hold on flights, dragged to the office, and occasionally kicked across the floor.
After about 18 months of regular use, both AirTags are still live in Find My. I have replaced the rechargeable AAs in each case twice. That is a battery swap every nine months, which is roughly four times what the stock CR2032 was lasting. Not 10 years — I am using rechargeables — but the value comparison still favors the Elevation Lab case because the rechargeable cells I am putting in are otherwise the same cells I already own for every other device.
The cases themselves have not given me any trouble. They have been thrown in the vehicle, dropped on concrete, stepped on (accidentally, by someone entering the trunk), and otherwise generally mistreated. None of the four cases in the pack have broken. The internal AirTag has stayed dry and connection-stable through it all. None of the four screws that hold each case together have come loose, which is part of why I am annoyed by them — they stay where you put them.
I threw one in a backpack pocket that is occasionally rained on. The cases are not advertised as fully waterproof to a depth, but they have a gasket under the lid and the screws are tight, and the AirTag inside has not lost a connection. I am happy calling them weatherproof for backpack-trunk-and-camper use.
The thing I did not expect to care about: the AirTag speaker is now muffled, because it has to fire through the case wall. The chirp you get when an iPhone pings a missing AirTag is much quieter through the Elevation Lab case than through a bare AirTag. If you rely on the chirp to find a small lost item under a couch cushion, the case mutes that experience. For my use case — vehicle and backpack — I do not care. The Find My map works the same either way.
What I like
- Lasts longer than a stock AirTag. With rechargeables, I am at about 9 months per set of cells. With lithium AAs, the case is rated for 10 years. Either way I am not changing batteries constantly.
- Takes any two AAs — lithium, alkaline, rechargeable NiMH. The pitch is the 10-year number with lithium, but the case does not care what you put in it. If you already own a drawer of rechargeables, those work fine here, with the obvious lifetime tradeoff.
- Rugged. The case is overmolded rubber around a hard plastic shell. I have thrown one in a trunk, one in a backpack, and both are unmarked. I have stepped on one and it still works. This is the use case the product was built for.
- Weatherproof. Not “scuba-diving-rated” waterproof, but tight enough for rain, splashes, and being left outside. The gasket under the lid and the four captive screws do their job.
- Apple AirTag compatibility is not a question. When you put the AirTag in, it pairs as normal and shows up in Find My exactly where it always did. Nothing changes on the phone side.
- Drop-in replacement for an AirTag you already have. If you already own a spare AirTag, you do not need a new one — you put the AirTag you have into this case. Two AAs go in beside it. Done.
- Cheaper than buying new dedicated trackers. A 4-pack of cases is around $40 list. That is less than one dedicated long-life tracker would cost.
What annoys me
- The screws are not Phillips-head. They take a hex (Allen) key. Specifically a special, slightly-uncommon size of hex that is bundled in the box. If you lose the bundled key, you are buying another one from a hobby store before you can change batteries.
- The screws and the hex key come in a separate bag. Not attached to the case, not held captive in the lid, not stuck inside the box in a smart way. They arrive in a small baggie that is easy to lose. About 30% of my time changing batteries has been spent finding the baggie of screws.
- For a 4-pack, only two of them are in active use. The other two are stored, screws and keys loose in whatever drawer the baggie ended up in. Months later, when I actually need to use a third case, finding the bits is a small chore.
- The “10-year” claim assumes a specific battery. Energizer Ultimate Lithium AAs, in writing. If you use alkaline or rechargeable, the number is dramatically lower. I do not want to switch to a $1 AA per cell just to hit the 10 years, so I am leaving a lot of capacity on the table with my rechargeables.
- No published runtime curve for rechargeables. I would happily buy the case again knowing I would get 9 months per charge, but I am working that out from experience. Elevation Lab does not publish a NiMH-specific estimate. There is room for a chart of “lithium / alkaline / rechargeable” with expected months of normal use.
- Muffles the AirTag speaker. The chirp when an iPhone pings a lost AirTag is much quieter through the case wall. If you wanted the case as a “still find my keys” solution, the speaker is the weak link.
- Adds bulk. The case is roughly 4× the volume of a bare AirTag. In a tight glove box or a small backpack pocket, that matters more than the spec sheet suggests. Mine fit, but they are noticeable.
- The bundled hex key is poorly labeled. There is no size marking on it. If you put it in a junk drawer with other Allen keys, you do not know which one it is. A Phillips screwdriver would have been universally recognized.
Who it is for, who should skip it
This is the right case for any AirTag where you do not want to swap the CR2032 every year — vehicles, luggage, RVs, ATVs, gear stored in garages, anything that gets tossed around or left outside. If you have ever had an AirTag die just when you needed it, the AA-powered case solves that. It is also a worthwhile upgrade if you already own a drawer of AAs or AA rechargeables.
Skip it if you do not want to keep track of a small hex key. Skip it if your use case is “small item lost somewhere in the house, click Play to find it” — the muffled speaker makes that experience worse. Skip the 4-pack if you only need two of them — the half-life problem with the loose screws and key applies harder to the half you do not actively use.
Verdict
The Elevation Lab AA AirTag case is what I would have bought a year earlier if I had known about it. It does the one thing that matters — extends real-world battery life well past the stock AirTag — and does it in a rugged, weatherproof housing. The reason this is a B and not an A is the hardware-design tradeoff: hex screws instead of Phillips, the screws and key arriving in a separate bag, and the case not having a place to keep them captive. Two of the four cases in my 4-pack are actively deployed and they are great. The other two are loose in a drawer waiting for me to find the baggie again. That is the caveat.
Grade: B. Easy buy for vehicle-and-backpack AirTags; lose one star to the captive-screw design.

- Compatibility: Any Apple AirTag. Drop in, snap lid, pair normally. No app needed; no firmware update.
- Screw size: A small hex / Allen key, around 2 mm. Not a Phillips, not a Torx, not a security bit. Specialty store trip if you lose it.
- AirTag speaker: Muffled when pinging through the case. Find My map and notifications work exactly the same.
- What I would change: Use a Phillips screw instead of a hex. Make the screws captive in the lid. Add a print on the case or in the box with rough lifetime estimates for lithium, alkaline, and rechargeable.
